What Rocket Money is actually selling

Rocket Money started life as Truebill, an app whose single trick was finding forgotten subscriptions in your transaction feed and cancelling them for you. Rocket Companies — the mortgage lender — acquired it in 2021 and rebranded it in 2022. That history matters, because the product is still organized around money-recovery services rather than budgeting: subscription cancellation, bill negotiation, and a "smart savings" account. The budget screens exist, but they are the least invested-in part of the app.

Its two headline services carry costs people underestimate. Bill negotiation is not a subscription perk — Rocket Money takes between 35% and 60% of the first year of savings it wins for you, charged upfront. And cancellation only works because the app has full read access to your linked accounts through an aggregator, which is also how it powers the rest of the product. The premium tier itself is "pay what you want" between roughly $6 and $12 a month, but the useful features (unlimited budget categories, custom categories, cancellations, credit reporting) sit above the free line, so in practice most users pay.

Rocket Money is a good fit for one specific person: someone with many linked US accounts and a real subscription problem, who will recover the fee in cancelled charges in the first month. It is a poor fit if you already know what you are subscribed to, if you do not want an aggregator holding read access to every account, or if you need Spanish — the app is English-only. Dinero Claro solves the recurring-charge problem differently: the AI money coach flags repeating charges in your own logged transactions, so you get the same insight without granting bank access or paying a percentage of your savings to get it.
